Home Depot hosts lighting showcase
New York — The Home Depot is spreading the word about energy-efficient lighting options.
During a New York made-for-media event, the retailer and a handful of its vendors retrofitted a hotel suite to showcase new light bulb technologies in a home setting.
The New Lighting for New Savings: Light Bulb Showcase 2012 featured products from Philips, Cree, Lighting Science Group, TCP and Lutron.
"What we’re doing is telling the consumer what their options are, and what the benefits are," said Bill Hamilton, merchandising VP electrical for Atlanta-based Home Depot.
The retailer has more than 100 bulb options on its shelves currently, all designed to use less energy than their incandescent equivalents. In January 2012, a multiyear phaseout of incandescent bulbs will begin. Hamilton said the retailer is taking on the role of guide and advocate for the consumer to help them with their lighting decisions.
Home Depot sells more light bulbs than any other retailer, and more than the second and third ranked retailer combined, he said. The event showcased the latest in LED lights, dimmable CFLs and high-efficiency incandescent light bulbs.

Cox Industries and iLevel collaborate on treated wood
Orangeburg, S.C.-based Cox Industries and iLevel by Weyerhaeuser have joined efforts to expand distribution of Cox fire- and preservative-treated lumber, plywood and columns in select Atlantic states under the Cox D-Blaze and Ecolife brands.
Cox D-Blaze fire-retardant treated lumber and plywood can help control the spread of flames and smoke, and Ecolife by Cox can help protect wood against fungal decay, termite damage and weathering, the company said.
Specific Cox products available through iLevel vary by market, and are distributed through iLevel’s Richmond, Charlotte and Jacksonville distribution centers.
"This collaboration is about more than moving products to market; it’s about delivering quality products and services in innovative and socially responsible ways," said R. Michael Johnson, CEO of Cox Industries.
In addition to creating new distribution avenues for Cox’s breadth of outdoor building materials and fire-retardant lumber, the companies will work together on marketing and sales promotion activities, including leveraging the continuing education sales program created by Cox in 2008. This series of events bring both product and building practice curriculum to designers, code officials and builders — resulting in more than 15,000 continuing education credits in 2010.

Andersen recognized as energy leader
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) have named Andersen Corp. as 2011 Energy Star Partner of the Year award winner for the Product Manufacturer – Windows category for its family of brands, including Andersen Windows, Renewal by Andersen, Eagle Window & Door and Silver Line Building Products. It is the second year in a row the company has received this distinction.
“Andersen’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability goes back as far as Andersen itself — more than 100 years. It is in our nature, our company culture and every product we create,” said Jay Lund, president and chief operating officer of Andersen. “Energy Star recognizes that, and we are honored to be a part of the Partner of the Year program for the second year in a row.”
Andersen received the designation for its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by manufacturing and educating consumers about energy-efficient products.
Andersen will be recognized April 12 at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Andersen has been part of the Energy Star program since its inception in 1998 and was the first window manufacturer awarded the Energy Star National Window Partner of the Year in 1999. For the second year in a row, Andersen is honored for its leadership in manufacturing products that earn the Energy Star moniker, the government-backed symbol of energy efficiency.
