Home Depot execs hit the aisles

Home Depot is sending its executives into the stores on a regular basis to experience life in the field and figure out ways to improve operations, according to an article in the  Atlantic Journal Constitution .

 

Approximately 170 employees from the company’s Atlanta headquarters were divided into teams of 10 and deployed to different stores this past summer, working one day a week in various departments. The 13-week program, called “Summer in the Stores,” will be followed by “Fall in the Field” and “Winter in the Warehouse” as other executives take their turn.

 

Cara Kinzey, senior VP  information technology, told the newspaper that her stint in the paint department will save the retailer approximately $20 million a year in “oops” paint (wrong colors). Two changes — scanning base paint barcodes before mixing the paint and putting scanners next to every computer — will dramatically cut down on mistakes, Kinzey said.

Briggs & Stratton files counterclaim in patent case

Milwaukee-based Briggs & Stratton has filed a counterclaim in a U.S. district court in Omaha against Beatrice lawnmower maker Exmark Manufacturing, according to the Journal Star.

Exmark, a division of the Toro Co., sued Briggs & Stratton and Schiller Grounds Care in May, alleging their mowers infringe on its patents.

At issue is Exmark’s 863 Patent, which covers multi-blade mowers equipped with baffles between blades, allowing the mower to be converted from a mulching to a side-discharge mower.

Royal names new Bluegrass business manager

Atlanta-based Royal Group announced the appointment of Timothy Johnson as business manager of Bluegrass, Royal’s mounts, shutters and vents business. Johnson will be responsible for injecting new focus into the brand of finish mounts, shutters and vents for the residential housing market.

“We are delighted to welcome Timothy Johnson to the Royal Group family,” said Simon Bates, VP and general manager of Royal Building Products. “His skills in brand strategy, product development, sales and business management are assets that will contribute significantly to the growth and success of our organization. We look forward to Tim’s contribution.”

Prior to joining Royal Group, Johnson held roles of increasing responsibility with Velux America and GAF Materials Corp.
