At Universal Forest Products, an historic quarter

BY HBSDealer Staff

With growth from independent and big box retailers, Universal Forest Products reported its best-ever quarter when it comes to net earnings and net sales.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan-based forest products company reported second-quarter net sales of $872 million, up 4% from $838 million in the same quarter last year. Net earnings increased 27% to $34.2 million.

Sales in retail and construction markets increased 7.5% and 6.5%, respectively, over the same period last year.

According to UFPI CEO Matthew Missad, the growth came despite lower industrial production in the U.S. and a strong U.S. dollar that adversely affected the company's industrial business during the second quarter.

Recently announced acquisitions — Idaho Western in Nampa, Idaho; and Tampa, Florida-based Robbins Manufacturing Co. — are expected to add $100 million in annual gross sales, the company said.

In the retail business, UFPI said it saw growth from independent and big box retailers, the latter of which saw healthy increases in comparable store sales in their most recently reported quarters.

Looking ahead, UFPI expects "healthy demand through the building season, barring adverse weather conditions and other unforeseen events."

In the construction sector, UFPI saw unit sales increases of 10% in its residential construction business and 4% in commercial construction. The company has benefited from rising U.S. housing starts in both site-build and factory-built housing, and a strong increase in commercial construction spending.

84 Lumber and LPGA golfer respond to floods

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Eighty Four, Pennsylvania – July 15, 2016 – Pennsylvania-based pro dealer 84 Lumber is lending aid to victis of the southern West Virginia flood by teaming with LPGA golfer Rachel Rohanna.

A Pennsylvania native, Rohanna is sponsored on the LPGA tour by 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort founder, Joe Hardy.

Starting with this weekend’s Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and O-I, Rohanna has committed to a $100 donation for every birdie (a score of one stroke under par) through the end of the 2016 professional season. 84 Lumber and Nemacolin will match Rohanna’s donation, thus tripling the initial pledge for a grand total of $300 per birdie.

“In a time of devastation, Rachel has taken it upon herself to help our West Virginia neighbors in any way she can,” said Maggie Hardy Magerko, President and Owner, 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. “As part of the 84 and Nemacolin family, we are excited to cheer Rachel on and to match her donation efforts.”

The funds will be donated to the West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster’s (WV-VOAD) general flood relief fund.

In addition to matching Rohanna’s monetary commitment, 84 Lumber also recently donated more than $20,000 worth of the most-needed personal items to the WV-VOAD in support of the flood relief efforts.
