Bay Area flooring retailer celebrates 135 years

BY HBSDealer Staff

Bay Area flooring retailer Conklin Bros. is celebrating the 135th anniversary of its humble beginnings as a carpet cleaning establishment in San Francisco.

The company was initially launched in 1880 by brothers Frank and Joe Conklin, though it was called The Pacific Steam Carpet Cleaning and Renovating Works at the time, located on Golden Gate Ave. in San Francisco.

According to the company, carpet used to be delivered to customers by mule-driven wagon, and the work was done at their plant.

Eventually, Frank and Joe retired and the business was taken over by Joseph Emmons and his son Jack. With the Conklin brand still intact, retail floor covering was added to the company's operations.

The company would eventually be sold to Richard Oderio in 1963, who moved the company to San Jose.

Today, the outfit is run by Richard's son Rick and maintains three showrooms in San Jose, Fremont and San Mateo.

Says the company, it maintains its reputation for quality product offerings, expert installation and repair, and its ability to adapt to the times (hence its new mobile showroom).
