Glidden announces paint giveaway

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Call it the Paint Giveaway War. Following on the heels of Valspar’s “Power in Color” campaign, where the paint manufacturer gave away 100,000 free paint-sample kits during the first 100 days of 2011, Glidden has upped the ante with its “97% Paint Quart Giveaway.”  The first 200,000 people who register online at glidden.com on May 16 to 17 can choose a free quart of interior paint in eggshell finish of any of the 306 colors available in the Glidden paint color palette.

The promotional campaign was named for the 97% of Glidden paint users who said in a survey that they’d recommend Glidden to a friend, according to the company.

Glidden is a brand of AkzoNobel, which also makes Ralph Lauren and Devoe Paints, Flood, and Liquid Nail adhesives and caulks.

The AHMA tackles federal budget in survey

BY HBSDEALER Staff

American Hardware Manufacturers Association (AHMA) members have offered opinions about the federal budget as part of the group’s Industry Confidence Index survey.

The group’s April Confidence Index survey asked two questions of AHMA members. The first was: “The Obama administration has proposed raising taxes on persons making more than $250,000 per year as part of a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit.  In your opinion, is this an effective way to reduce the deficit?”

Twenty percent responded “Yes,” 7% percent responded “Not Sure,” and 73% responded “No.”

The second question was: “Some members of Congress are renewing calls for passage of a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution as a solution to the budget deficit problem. Are you in favor of a balanced budget amendment?”

On the balanced budget amendment, 63% responded “Yes,” 20% responded “Not Sure,” and 17% responded “No.”

Retail sales, including NAICS 444, grow in April

BY HBSDEALER Staff

The U.S. Census Bureau reported yesterday that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for April were $389.4 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. That’s an increase of 0.5% from the previous month, and up 7.6% compared with April 2010.

Total sales for the February-through-April  period were up 8.1% from the same period a year ago.

Looking specifically at NAICS classification 444 — Building material & garden equipment & supplies dealers — advanced sales for April were $24.496 billion; that’s up slightly from the March figure of $24.461 billion, but down 3.7% from $25.446 billion in the year-ago month.

The Advance Monthly Sales report also revealed overall retail trade sales were up 0.6% from March, and 7.9% above last year. Nonstore retailers sales were up 15.5% from last year.

All the figures above are adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes.
