ECi RockSolid certified for integration with Ace Rewards
Fort Worth, Texas-based eCommerce Industries has announced that Ace Hardware has given its final certification to ECi’s RockSolid POS business system software for integration with the Ace Rewards program. Ace Rewards is a retail incentive program that awards points based on dollars spent and provides members advanced notice of sales, members-only coupons and allows them to submit rebates online.
“This is a huge win for ECi RockSolid,” said Scott Stanford, president of ECi’s LBMH Division. “We will now be able to offer our solution to more hardware stores associated with Ace Hardware. Being able to offer Ace Rewards to the consumer is very important to those dealers.”
ECi RockSolid POS is built for the independent hardware dealer, a good fit for Ace Hardware’s retail cooperative model, which allows its dealers to remain independent. “It’s just a natural relationship,” Stanford said. “It extends ECi’s reach for more dealers by allowing those dealers to offer a valuable benefit to their customers. A rewards program is a great customer retention tool.”

Do it Best in 2011: Sales and rebates rise
Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. reported net sales of $2.33 billion for the year ended June 25, 2011, an increase of 1.4% over the previous fiscal year.
Other data from the company’s income statement showed gross profit for fiscal 2011 of $176.8 million, up 3.4% from $171 million last year.
Net income slipped to $458,000 from $955,000. But the figure perhaps most interesting to the co-op’s member retailers is the total shareholders refund, which increased to $105.8 million, up from $100.6 million in 2010.
In his president’s message, CEO Bob Taylor described some expense increases. "We did experience some significant expense increases this year in areas like health care, outbound freight and in efforts related to some of our key initiatives, but we were still able to hold the overall rise to just one-half of one percent," he said.
Another sales tally of note from the co-op deals with its "Sneak Peek" sales event during its Fall Market in Indianapolis earlier this month. The event generated $7.9 million in sales, a new record for the co-op’s pre-market sales event.

Ace Hardware clarifies deal with Sears Brands
Speaking to Ace Hardware dealers at the co-op’s 2011 Fall Convention & Exhibits in Denver, Ace’s John Surane clarified Ace’s agreement with Sears regarding Craftsman and exclusivity.
"Our agreement gives Ace the exclusive rights to sell the craftsman brand in the convenience hardware channel until the year 2015," Surane told dealers during the General Session in Denver. He added the deal does not prohibit Sears, which owns the Craftsman brand, from selling to big-box retailers or the mass merchants.
The clarification followed news that Craftsman was being sold at retailers outside of Sears and Ace.
Surane, senior VP consumer marketing, merchandising and paint, described the Craftsman program as one of the most important ingredients to boost business and a clear differentiator for Ace stores.
"Ace has the widest most complete Craftsman offering outside the Sears stores in the market today," he said. "We cannot guarantee or dictate what happens with this or any other national brand in the future. However, what we can do is take full advantage of the exclusivity we enjoy today, and the differentiation that we have today."
