Dunn-Edwards factory wins ‘Best Project’
Dunn-Edwards, the Southwest manufacturer of premium paint, received a Real Estate and Development (RED) Award from the Arizona Commercial Real Estate (AZRE) for Best Industrial Project for its new 336,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility.
The 7th Annual RED Awards recognize the most notable commercial real estate projects of 2011 and the construction teams involved. AZRE held an open call for nominations and a record 116 projects were submitted by architects, contractors, developers and brokerage firms in Arizona.
Custom-designed to be the greenest and most efficient in the coatings industry, the plant was awarded LEED Gold certification, is the winner of NAIOP’s Best Industrial Redevelopment Project in 2010 and an Award of Merit winner by Engineering News-Record in the Southwest.
Dunn-Edwards placed significant effort on energy efficiency in its new industrial warehouse by using recycled materials to build its facility. Upon completion, 31.7% of the supplies were recycled, equivalent to a savings of $772,255. The operations design incorporates innovative technology for the reuse of manufacturing by-products, including waste water and particulate matter.
By combining various distribution facilities toward a central location, Dunn-Edwards cut its overall cost by more than 40%.
Toro building new Iowa DC
The Toro Co. has partnered with Ryan Cos. to build a 450,000-sq.-ft. distribution center near Des Moines, Iowa. Toro will lease the facility from Ryan once construction is completed later this year. Toro will then transition distribution operations from its current facilities in Lakeville, Minn., and Beatrice, Neb., to the Des Moines facility.
The location will primarily distribute Toro and Exmark-branded residential and landscape contractor turf maintenance equipment to distributors, dealers, and The Home Depot in the United States and Canada.
“With growth in our Residential and Landscape Contractor businesses, this larger facility creates expansion flexibility as we work toward our Destination 2014 revenue and profitability goals, and operational efficiencies by being in close proximity to both our Windom and Beatrice manufacturing plants,” said Judy Altmaier, Toro VP operations and quality management. “The Des Moines location also provides good transportation infrastructure and site access.”
The facility will employ about 20 people.
“Job creation is foremost in our economic development strategy for Iowa,” said Terry E. Branstad, Governor of Iowa. “The Toro Co. will create at least 20 high-quality jobs with this distribution center, jobs that could have gone somewhere else. We welcome Toro to Iowa, and we look forward to their successful partnership with Ryan Cos. in developing this project.”
