Deck Demon demolishes decks

Las Vegas — Necessity is the mother of invention. 

Jon Nolle is a contractor who needed to take down a deck and fast. His solution: a two-pronged demolition bar that fits over the joist and provides the mechanical advantage to pry up the boards on decks. 

Nolle was demonstrating his invention – the Deck Demon – here at the National Hardware Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center. 

The head of the tool fits over single or double joists. And both prongs of the product 

The Deck Demon is a product of Angel-Guard Products. 

“The head is wide enough to fit over the boards, but its narrow enough to maintain its strength,” Nolle said. 

Both prongs of the red demo tool are designed to remove nails, too. The product weighs about 11 pounds.

High honors for Golden Hammer winners

Las Vegas — home improvement vendors were selected as Golden Hammer Committee Choice winners during the Golden Hammer Awards Ceremony here during the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

The Committee Choice winners were selected by a retail-and-distributor panel from the pool of 31 Golden Hammer Award winners. 

The five Committee Choice winners for 2013 are:

New Product Innovation: 3M
Inventory Management: Leviton
Serving the Pros: DeWalt
Category Management: Scotts
Quality Control: Valspar

The 2013 Golden Hammer Awards ceremony recognized home improvement suppliers in 31 categories during a Wednesday morning ceremony.

The awards were based on an electronic survey of retailers and distributors conducted earlier this year. Retailers and distributors were asked to select one vendor per category that exemplifies excellence through their commitment to category management, inventory Management, new product innovation, and quality control. 

The 2013 Retail Committee consisted of the following executives: 

Brett Hammers, Orgill senior VP marketing and Merchandising
Mike Clark VP and chief merchandising officer, True Value
Steve Markley, VP of merchandising Do it Best
George Smith, CEO Westlake Ace Hardware
Ken Goodgame, General merchandise manager for Ace Hardware. 
Mickey Schulte vice president of Purchasing & Marketing, Handy Hardware Wholesale.

Fishing legends and comedy star play it safe

Las Vegas — Wexford, Pa.-based Safety Works unveiled new products, including a Larry the Cable Guy line of hand, eye, head and body protection, and also a line of hand protection from “The 3 Legends” of professional fishing.

The Larry the Cable Guy licensed products include a “Git-R-Done” hard hat and vests, along with safety glasses branded with a small “Git-R-Done” logo. “Git-R-Done” is the stock phrase of the comedian.

The 3 Legends of fishing line include textured fish grip gloves, high-dexterity fish grip gloves and waterproof cold weather gloves. Images of the three legends — Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston and Roland Martin — appear on the packaging.

Both new lines were introduced here at the National Hardware Show, May 7-9 in Las Vegas.
