Dealer creates the South Georgia Home Showcase

A Tifton, Ga.-based lumberyard company hopes to build business – and relationships — by creating an event for local homeowners called the South Georgia Home Showcase.

Jay Short, owner of Short and Paulk Supply Co., is promoting the Feb. 12-13 home show as a can’t-miss event for both home owners and builders. Some 100 manufacturers and suppliers are expected to attend the event, held at the Tifton campus of the University of Georgia. At the same time, the show will provide builders continuing education every hour from the American Institute of Architects.

Short and Paulk operates five retail lumberyards in Georgia, plus a truss plant and a door shop. The event grew out of a relationship Short made with UGA during the building of a net-zero-energy house on the Tifton campus a few years ago.

"I had talks with a professor about how get building science out in front of more people. We go to a lot of shows like the Builders’ Show,  LMC shows, Orgill shows – but if we could have some kind of training event and also let people see the new products and do all of that together, then we might be really onto something.”

More than 100 companies are expected to particpate as exhibitors at the inaugural Home Showcase. Plus, the event will feature 12 Contractor College Classes. 

“We’re going to have a group of interns from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College going all day long doing interviews pictures and videos on Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram,” he said. “We’ll create that excitement so that if you’re not here, you got to be here.”

Lumberyard participation in home shows is common. But creating a show from scratch is a rare approach. To Short, the idea is simple: If it helps his builders and it helps his home owners, then by definition, it helps Short and Paulk.

Short also sees the show – co-presented this year by Conger LP Gas – as a community-building exercise. Registered attendees enter for free, but a walk-in door charge of $10 is donated to Habitat for Humanity. Also, proceeds from sale of water and Gatorade will go to a local organization promoting literacy.

“If we’re able to make good things happen around us, then we’ll benefit, too,” Short said.

LMC dealers head back to school

LMC’s Executive Education Program recently took on an Ivy League setting — quite literally.

The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania played host to more than 40 dealers from 22 states. Held Jan. 14–19, the event provided an opportunity for dealers to learn and grow under the guidance of Wharton professors, LMC said.  

“The partnership with Wharton and the ability to offer this kind of program, not seen elsewhere in the industry, is part of the reason LMC dealers stand out,” LMC president John Somerville said. “Since its inception in 2015, there has been high demand to be in attendance for this unique executive education experience.”

For participants in this year's program, a new case study was offered around the topic of driving growth.

“The program gave us an opportunity to step outside our companies and hear other people’s points of view,” said Mike Heim, inside sales manager of Tague Lumber in Media, Pa.

Cory Jameson, CEO of Guy C. Lee in Smithfield, N.C., was a return attendee of the Wharton program. “It’s a whole other experience being here for a second time,” he said. “It reinforces what you learned the first time and it really makes you appreciate the people that are in this room.”

Based in Wayne, Pa., LMC (Lumbermens Merchandising Corporation) is a buying group with more than 1,400 dealer locations in the United States and the Bahamas.

Management appointments at Roseburg Forest Products

Roseburg Forest Products has made a series of management appointments in the early stages of 2018.

Phil Odom has been named business manager for Roseburg’s plywood and lumber business. The newly created role consolidates the reporting structure of the company’s plywood and lumber sales organization.

James Taylor, Kevin Smith and Kelly Robertson — sales managers for lumber, softwood plywood and hardwood plywood — will report to Odom. In addition, central planning manager Patrick Schleisman and the plywood field sales team, including John Biedermann, Bob Clark, Gary Hayes and Robin Long, will report to Odom.

Phil has held several roles at BlueLinx Corp., where he most recently served as VP of national business development. During his time at BlueLinx, and earlier at Georgia-Pacific, he managed sales, distribution, manufacturing and operations teams. He has developed national sales strategies and built out new channels, markets and product lines, Roseburg said.

Roseburg has also appointed Steve Courtney as the director of solid wood resource procurement, effective Jan. 22. In this newly created role, Courtney will be responsible for planning, sourcing and managing the log supply requirements for the solid wood business and will report directly to Steve Killgore, senior VP of solid wood.

As a member of the solid wood operations leadership team, Courtney will work closely with Roseburg’s Resource Group and will coordinate log supply planning and procurement with Gabe Crane, who will transition out of the log procurement role to assume expanded responsibilities within the resource group. Crane will continue to report to Scott Folk, senior VP of resources.

“The creation of this new role and organizational structure reflects Roseburg’s ongoing efforts to optimize value within the company’s manufacturing and resource businesses,” Killgore said. “We are excited to bring Steve on board.”

Courtney served most recently as the general manager of wood procurement for the northwest operations of Interfor Corp. He brings more than 25 years of industry experience and has been active in industry affairs. He currently serves as chairman of the American Forest Resources Council and will work from the Roseburg’s western regional office in Dillard, Ore.

Also, Tony Ramm has been promoted to general manager of plywood, effective Feb. 1. Tate Muir will replace him as plant manager at Roseburg’s plywood plant in Riddle, Ore. 

As general manager for plywood operations, Ramm will be responsible for managing Roseburg’s plywood facilities in Dillard, Riddle and Coquille, Ore. He will report to Bob Jewell, director of solid wood manufacturing. 

Ramm was named Riddle plywood plant manager in May 2014. He joined Roseburg from Weyerhaeuser, where he held increasingly responsible positions for 10 years. He also worked for Boise Cascade for 11 years. 

Tate Muir has worked for Roseburg for the past 21 years. He has served as Riddle plywood’s manufacturing superintendent since June 2013, overseeing all manufacturing processes at the plant.

Based in Roseburg, Ore., Roseburg Forest Products is one of the nation’s largest privately held forest products companies.
