City of Hope gets Home Depot grant
The City of Hope has received a three-year, $535,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation that will enable it to remodel the main facilities office of Hope Village, a housing complex located on the cancer center’s campus.
Hope Village provides residential units for 40 patients and their caregivers while they are undergoing cancer treatment. The grant will help upgrade electricity and plumbing and bathroom fixtures in the office, which provides shared facilities for those staying at Hope Village.
City of Hope is one of the few cancer centers in the country to offer temporary housing for patients and their families. Service and amenities include fully equipped kitchens, 24-hour tram service, and a computer and lounge area for patients and their families. In addition, an exclusive RV park containing six spaces with full hookups to water, electricity and disposal is available to all families.
This is the third grant from The Home Depot Foundation, which has awarded City of Hope nearly $3 million in grants for the past nine years to be used for improvements at Hope Village. These include the installation of solar panels on the Michael Amini Transfusion Medicine Center. These solar panels contributed to the Amini Center becoming the first green-certified building at City of Hope, receiving the Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating.
“City of Hope delivers advanced medicine in a caring and compassionate environment, and The Home Depot Foundation is honored to be able to support their mission,” said Kelly Caffarelli, president of The Home Depot Foundation. “We are pleased to once again help City of Hope provide that nurturing home environment that allows patients and their caregivers to stay close to the hospital, yet decompress in a setting that is closer to the comforts of home.”
Irwin Tools rings the bell for tradesmen
Executives of Irwin Tools and assorted tradesmen collectively rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange Thursday morning, promoting National Tradesmen Day, which is slated for Sept. 16.
“Tradesmen aren’t typically the focus of the Stock Exchange, yet they are a vital part of our lives every day," said Ross Porter, president of Irwin Tools. "That’s why we invited several tradesmen to be a part of the notable tradition that opens the U.S. trading markets. If we don’t have a strong work force, America can’t function and thrive as it has for the last 200-plus years. We applaud what these skilled men and women contribute, often without the thanks that they deserve.”
Irwin is a division of Newell Rubbermaid, shares of which were trading on the NYSE at just under $14.
Among the honored tradesmen at today’s ceremony was Delwyn Thornton of Brandon, Miss., the North American Champion of the 2010 Irwin Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge. In ringing the opening bell, Delwyn stood shoulder-to-shoulder with tradesmen from across the nation, as well as leaders of Irwin Tools.
The inaugural National Tradesmen Day will celebrate the role of tradesmen in events across the country, with cookouts at local job sites and recognition at retail locations and schools, according to Irwin.
For brewers, a faucet described as “revolutionary”
Reaching out to home microbrewers, Milwaukee-based Perlick Corp. launched the patent-pending Stainless Steel Perl Faucet as the new standard on all residential beer-dispensing units.
Perlick describes its new faucet as a "revolution in residential beer dispensing." The product’s Perl ball and floating O-ring design eliminate the need for a valve shaft. The result is a system whereby contents are never exposed to air and with no space for mold and bacteria to grow. The Perl Faucet also has fewer internal parts, making it easy to use, easy to clean and remarkably reliable, the company said.
“Product wisdom, acquired through nearly a century of experience as the leader in the commercial beer dispensing industry, is what created the revolutionary Perl Faucet,” said Jeff Wimberly, VP sales and marketing for Perlick’s Residential and Hospitality Products. “Perlick strives to make only the best available for our customers. We are proud to make the innovative Perl faucet available as the new standard to consumers and beer aficionados everywhere.”
