Citing fire hazard, Viking recalls refrigerator freezers

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Viking is recalling its built-in side-by-side refrigerator freezers with in-door dispensers after receiving 27 reports of electrical shorts, as well as four reports of fires.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the electrical connectors in the wiring harness have a tendency to overheat.

The recall affects about 750 units of Viking 42-in. and 48-in. built-in side-by-side refrigerator freezers with in-door water and ice dispensers. They were manufactured between October 2012 and May 2013, sold for between $5,400 and $6,400, and come in various colors and finishes. Model numbers begin with FDSB5421D, VCSB5421D, FDSB5481D and VCSB5481D.

The CPSC is urging consumers to turn off and unplug the freezers, and to contact Viking for a free, in-home repair.

Carter Lumber expands in Georgia

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Kent, Ohio-based Carter Lumber expanded south with the opening of its first store in Georgia.

The 144-unit pro dealer acquired Athens Building Supply in Athens, Ga., which opened yesterday under the Carter Lumber banner.

"Carter Lumber is not chasing trends or building permits, but rather developing markets with opportunities inside or very near our successful footprint," said Carter Lumber president Jeff Donley. "One of the most important parts of entering a new market is ensuring that we have quality people from the lumberyard industry who understand our business platform, know the market and the customers."

The 22-year veteran Brian Massie was hired to serve as district manager for the greater Atlanta market. Carter also hired J.R. Whitfield as sales manager. Russell Kozlowski was named general manager of the Athens location.

"This is Carter Lumber’s first store in the state of Georgia," Massie said. "As we continue to grow and open new locations, we look forward to building relationships with our customers, supporting the local communities and being the best lumberyard in the state of Georgia."

Carter now operates in 12 mostly Midwestern states from Michigan to Georgia.
