California retailer hosts tort reform event

BY HBSDealer Staff

San Diego — A statewide tour of the California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse made a stop at Coles Fine Flooring on March 23, according to an article in the San Diego Union Tribune.

The nonpartisan organization, which describes itself “a grassroots movement of concerned citizens and businesses who are fighting against lawsuit abuse in California,” brought together state and local politicians and business owners to discuss legal reform. Of particular concern was litigation over the Americans with Disabilities Act.

George Coles, president of Coles Fine Flooring, told the newspaper he’s been the target of three frivolous lawsuits.

“I was sued for trumped-up Americans with Disabilities violations, which I took personal because I have a lot of loyal disabled customers here and I’ve never had a complaint,” Coles said. The company eventually settled out of court for $2,400 to avoid the cost of litigation.

Consumer perception index improves slightly

BY HBSDEALER Staff

Consumer research from Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group shows consumer perception of the economy increased slightly in March, compared with the prior month and the same month last year.

The March figure for the NPD U.S. Economic Perception Indicator measured 40.2, with 0 being “very concerned” and 100 being “very confident.”

The index improved from 39.5 in February. In March 2011, the index measured 39.2.

Households with kids ages 13 to 18, and $25k to $50k income consumers expressed the most positive economic outlooks, according to NPD Group. “Consumer concerns about U.S. job losses continued to fall from February. More consumers believe investing in the stock market is a good idea, and that the fundamentals of the economy are stable.”

The NPD Group’s U.S. Economic Perception Indicator measures consumer beliefs about the current and near-term state of the U.S. economy.
