Bellawood has released a new finish and several new flooring styles for the fall season, including a line of matte "oil-look" prefinished floors.

The result: a completely upgraded collection of flooring, featuring 140 new colors, styles and species.

The new matte offerings boast "a modern style and classic Americana aesthetic," said the company.

Bellawood touts floors that it says are twice as scratch-resistant as other hardwood floors.

The latest study from The Freedonia Group pinpoints U.S. pipe demand at a high point of $63.5 billion in 2018, indicating a 7.3% annual growth rate.

The study, titled Plastic & Competitive Pipe, attributes the increase to growth in crude oil and natural gas activity, in which market pipe is frequently implicated.

Additionally, Freedonia predicts a rebound in building construction expenditures, with an emphasis on kitchen and bathroom renovations and conduit for nonresidential building construction.

Citing an increasing demand for low-gloss hardwood floors in the U.S., Bellawood is adding prefinished oil-look matte styles to its product line.

According to the company, low-gloss floors are good for concealing minor scratches, dirt and fur, which is helping fuel the demand in homes with kids and pets.

Bellawood's new line achieves these results without the need to add a high-maintenance oil finish. Instead, the company uses a proprietary topcoat with a UV-cured aluminum oxide finish.

Founded in 1917, Morrison is now the largest distributor of plumbing supplies in the southwestern United States. Dunn-Edwards, the Los Angeles-based paint and sundries line, has introduced a premium interior enamel product line that has the performance and appearance of traditional oil-based paint but cleans up with soap and water. 

Called Aristowall, the gloss and semi-gloss paint is a water-oil hybrid product designed for interior walls, trim, molding, cabinets, doors, kitchens, baths and high-traffic areas. It uses waterborne alkyd technology, according to Terry Chi, product manager. “The end result is a surface that looks like glass,” she said.

According to an article in the New York Times, Home Depot's executive VP merchandising Craig Menear is among those encouraging alternatives to expensive plastic packages.

Plastic packaging known as clamshells -- the kind that usually require cutting tools to open -- are being affected by the price of oil. The article reports Wal-Mart has pledged to reduce its packaging by 5% in the five years ending 2013.

Pet supplies are one of the many non-traditional categories found at Bering’s Hardware in Houston. “People love their animals, and they take good care of them,” Augie Bering Jr. said. “You may not come to Bering’s for pet supplies, but when you walk by our department, you may think, ‘You know, I should pick up something for my dog while I’m here.’”

This is not the only retailer reaching out in ways a traditional hardware store might not. 

Motor oil in Lowe’s. Paper towels in Home Depot. Groceries in Menards.
