Orlando, Florida – Ace’s current merchandise strategy is heavy on the paint department, but there were plenty of other categories making news in the 850,000 square feet of exhibits here at the Orange County Convention Center.

Ace Hardware VP Merchandising Frank Carroll, speaking during the General Session here at the 2014 Fall Ace Convention & Exhibits, described the market as “a retail wonderland” with paint leading the way.

Sales to pros are growing faster than sales to consumers at Lowe’s, which recently reported a fourth quarter sales gain of 5.6%.

According to Chief Customer Officer Greg Bridgeford, the Mooresville, N.C.-based retail giant sees an opportunity to capitalize on the pro market.

Houston -- Retailers were privy to a number of below-manufacturing-cost "Power Buys" at the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, with the potential for added profit that "can pay for a couple of people to come to Houston," said general merchandise manager Frank Carroll at the opening General Session.

"The mindset here is a 'thank you'," he added. "Thank you for coming to Houston."

Reporting to senior VP merchandising, marketing and sales John Surane, Carroll will focus on merchandising strategy both domestically and internationally.

The Home Depot house brand has a new look, and according to the company, some new quality control.

Jim Recore, divisional merchandise manager for private brands at The Home Depot describes the Husky brand as one of about four that are “absolutely key to the success of our private label program.” 

Home Depot changed the color emphasis -- from red to black -- and also some improvements to the grips and handles and overall design of the tools.

Mike Post, an 11-year veteran of Do it Best Corp., has been promoted to the position of merchandise manager in the home decor category. 

Post joined Do it Best in 2004 as an assistant merchandise manager in farm and ranch and most recently worked as an associate in building specialties, a position he’s served in for the past five-plus years.

Denver -- The air was thick with sports metaphors during Ace Hardware's General Session of the 2011 Denver Fall Convention & Exhibits. 

Ace's top marketing and merchandising executives mixed retail strategies with quotes from Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi during a presentation in which they described the top 10 plays for winning at retail. The session even included half-time highlights of power tools and football touchdowns.

Recent innovations in the paint aisle have led to some differences — and even clashes — among players in the competitive field. 

For instance, Benjamin Moore challenged Sherwin-Williams’ claims that its Harmony line of paints was “no-VOC” or “zero VOC.” Everyone agreed Harmony’s base paint is free of volatile organic compounds, but when conventional colorants are added, the VOC levels increase above the accepted definition.

The co-op appointed Gary Loosle for lawn and garden – green goods, Josh Meyer for paint and sundries, and Chris Steinlicht for rental and store supplies.
