The 2014 deck-building season got off to a late start, and Trex felt the impact in its first-quarter results.

The Winchester, Virginia-based company reported net sales of $100.6 million, down from $107.9 million in last year's first quarter. Net income for the wood-alternative decking giant was $12.3 million, down from $21.6 million in the same period last year.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Company reported fourth-quarter sales of $63.8 million, an increase of 38% over the same quarter last year.

“We brought 2013 to a very strong finish,” said chairman, president and CEO Ronald W. Kaplan. “Expanded distribution and dealer demand across the country contributed significantly to sales and are helping us advance a key initiative -- increasing market share.”

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Co. announced that on Dec. 16, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted final approval of a settlement that resolves a nationwide class action lawsuit alleging misrepresentations and defects in Trex’s first-generation composite products relating to mold growth and color issues.

The cost to Trex under the settlement is capped at $8.25 million, plus $1.475 million in attorneys’ fees.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, is expanding its presence in the Mid-Atlantic region with the addition of Pittsburgh-based Babcock Lumber Company to its distribution network.

Babcock will supply dealers across western and central Pennsylvania, western New York and West Virginia with Trex products.

“Babcock is well-known and respected throughout the industry for its commitment to its customers,” said Ronald W. Kaplan, chairman, president and CEO of Trex.

Winchester, Va.-based American Woodmark Corp. saw sales rise 26% in the fourth quarter, with double-digit gains in each of its sales channels. 

Net sales for the quarter ended April 30 reached $171.1 million, as it swung to a profit of  $5.2 million, compared with a fourth-quarter loss of $6.0 million in 2012.

Trex, a manufacturer of composite decking and railing products, reported net sales for the first quarter of 2012 of $96.1 million, a 39% increase over net sales of $69.0 million for the same period in 2011. 

The Winchester, Va.-based company reported net income of $12.3 million for its first quarter,  which ended March 31, 2012. This compares to net income of $5.1 million for the prior-year period.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Co. launched the new Trex Enhance high-performance composite decking. 

The new product will be positioned between Trex Accents and Transcend in the company's good, better, best decking line-up, according to CEO Ronald Kaplan.

"Trex Enhance will both expand and strengthen our high-performance decking portfolio and provide consumers with a composite product that features a multitude of innovative features," said Kaplan.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex posted a third-quarter net loss of $0.5 million, compared with a net loss of $8.8 million in the 2010 period.

Net sales for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 totaled $67.9 million, up 12% from net sales of $60.6 million in the year-ago period.

In its first quarter ended July 31, the Winchester, Va.-based company pointed to growth in both its remodel and new construction business.

The company's net sales increased 20% to $131.2 million in the quarter. However, it still posted a net loss of $2.7 million. In the first quarter last year, American Woodmark's net loss was $3.4 million. 

Gross profit for the first quarter of fiscal year 2012 was 14.0% of net sales, compared with 13.2% in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year.

Poor weather hurt second-quarter sales at Trex, the nation's largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products. The macro-economy didn't help, either.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Co. reported net sales of $78.4 million for the second quarter ended June 30, down 32.1% from $115.5 million in the same quarter last year. Income declined to $2.1 million, compared with $4.8 million a year ago.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Co. expanded its original September 2010 licensing agreement with Syracuse, Ind.-based Poly-Wood to develop and market additional categories of outdoor living furniture.  

Under the expanded agreement, the Trex Outdoor Furniture collection will grow to include porch swings, rockers and benches along with retractable patio and deck shade umbrellas. All new designs will combine style, comfort and durability and will complement low-maintenance and eco-friendly Trex outdoor living spaces.

Winchester, Va.-based American Woodmark Corp., a manufacturer of kitchen cabinets and other home products, reported sales increases for the fourth quarter ended April 30, as well as the full year. But earnings declined.

In the fourth quarter, the company reported a 10% sales gain to $124.2 million, up from $112.4 million in the same quarter last year. For the full year, sales increased to $452.6 million, up 11.3% from $406.5 million in the prior year.

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Co. reported net sales for the fourth quarter of 2010 totaled $75.3 million, up 47% from net sales of $51.2 million for the 2009 fourth quarter. 

The wood-alternative decking and railing manufacturer reported a net loss of $0.5 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2010, compared with a net loss of $0.3 million in the 2009 period.
