Is Tile Shop the fastest-growing specialty building product retailer in the country? Or does it just seem like it?

In the span of a month, Tile Shop locations cropped up in Tulsa, Danbury, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. And since it went public in August 2012, the Minneapolis-based retailer has been expanding aggressively. Twenty stores opened in 2013, debuting in new markets amid a beefed-up corporate infrastructure.

The Tile Shop is opening a new store in Tulsa, which will mark its first retail location in the state of Oklahoma.

In a sea of orange smocks, the Hilti store-within-a-store format at many Home Depots had injected a splash of red-shirted Hilti sales reps.

That color combination is fading to black, as Tulsa, Okla.-based Hilti’s “Proshops,” as they are called, are pulling out of the world’s largest home improvement retailer.

The Hilti Proshops had been a fixture at Home Depot for about 13 years. Hilti products will continue to be available online through the Atlanta-based retail giant.

Tulsa, Okla.-based Mill Creek has plans to open a showroom, door shop and truss manufacturing plant in northern Wichita, Kan., according to an article in the Wichita Eagle.

Jeff Dunn, Mill Creek’s president, told the newspaper he’s “cautiously optimistic” about the city and wants to position the company for the inevitable upturn in new-home building.

Ray Burgess, who ran Burgess Hardware in west Tulsa, Okla., for more than 40 years, passed away on Jan. 30, according to an article in the Tulsa World. He was 73 years old.

Burgess Hardware opened in 1943 when Burgess' parents, Millard D. and Laura Burgess, bought an existing hardware store that had been operating since 1918. Burgess took over the store in 1962.
