Tampa, Florida-based Anvil Paint & Coatings promoted Glenn R. Roth to the position of CEO. 

Roth has worked to develop the Anvil brand for 16 years, and in that time has been present for Anvil’s most recent expansions as the company now occupies more than 55,000 square feet on five acres to produce for national paint sundries and market channels.

The Home Improvement Research Institute announced the hiring of Pam Heidel as research analyst based in HIRI’s Tampa office. 

Heidel is a former president of the board of the non-profit HIRI. Also, from 2007 to 2014, she was employed by Generac Power Systems, most recently as marketing director – digital and consumer insights. 

Heidel also worked as marketing planning manager for Broan-NuTone from 2000 through 2007.

Tampa, Florida-based VOLT Lighting, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce lighting manufacturer, is making moves on the West Coast via the opening of a new distribution center in Las Vegas.

The new facility, which is fully stocked and staffed, will make 1- to 3-day ground shipping possible for the company's West Coast customers.

MoistureShield, the Springdale, Ark.-based composite decking manufacturer, has expanded its presence in the Sunbelt and West Coast regions by adding 12 new distribution locations to its network.

Among the new distributors are Huttig Building Products in Phoenix, Nashville, and Jackson, Miss.; BlueLinx in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.; Dixie Plywood and Lumber Company in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas; Universal Forest Products in Thornton and Riverside, Calif.; and Intermountain Supply in Spokane, Wash.

The Valspar Corporation is kicking off the inaugural Valspar Championship -- taking place March 13 to 16 -- with a Habitat for Humanity community build in the Tampa area.

Valspar, together with Habitat, PGA TOUR Wives Association, PGA TOUR players and Habitat families will participate in the build, which will take place in a Pinellas County community made exclusively of Habitat for Humanity homes.

Sears Home Services is rolling out an initiative this year, called Building Community Together, that aims to restore homes and buildings in the communities where its employees live and work. 

To make this possible, Sears is teaming up with nonprofit Rebuilding Together to identify homes and provide repairs, create greater accessibility and make energy-efficient upgrades.

Nationwide Industries of Tampa, Fla., announced a product recall of a the Trident Pool Gate Latch. 

The company, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, said a potentially loose magnet could prevent the latch from securing a gate.

The recalled magnetic gate latches measure 10 ins. or 20 ins. and come in black or white.

The “DuraTrend” reports will focus on 12 major home improvement categories. Included will be data on product mix with the category, retailer share, overall average selling price by product and product mix by retailer.

Knotts Hardware, a Tampa, Fla., area hardware store, shut down for good on Oct. 12, according to an article in The Tampa Tribune. Johnny Knotts, whose grandfather Ben founded the store in the 1950s, blamed a poor economy, competition from home improvement chain stores and declining commercial accounts.

Tampa, Fla.-based entrepreneur John Wink, of Novel Ideas, has announced the national launch of EcoBorder, an environmentally friendly landscape product.

Manufactured in the United States and molded from recycled tire rubber, this landscape edging was invented in 15-year landscape Wink’s garage, after his position with Merrill Lynch ended about the time of the 2008 stock market crash. With 15 years of experience in landscaping, he invented EcoBorder out of his garage in 2009.

According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, Lowe’s will not build a planned store in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

The Mooresville, N.C.-based retailer reportedly invested some $3 million in the project, which was four years in the making, but decided the project wasn’t in the company’s best interest.

According to an article in the Tampa Tribune, Harvey's Hardware celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend by playing to its strengths -- a niche market in knives.

The store in Land O' Lakes, Fla., held its annual Case & Sons Cutlery knife event, which also featured appearances from local veterans and a presentation from a Case historian.

The retailer describes itself as a classic hometown hardware store, according to the article.

Tampa, Fla.-based roofing products manufacturer Gardner-Gibson acquired GH International, of Mississauga, Ontario, opening the way for Gardner-Gibson's expansion into the Canadian market. 

"This combination will enhance the products and services available, and also add additional resources through a team of devoted and skilled professionals," read a statement released by Gardner-Gibson.

The S&P/Case-Shiller Index, a closely watched indicator for the new housing market, has reported a monthly increase in prices for its 10- and 20-city composites for the first time in eight months. The composites were up 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively, in April versus March.

However, both indices are lower than a year ago, with the 10-city composite down 3.1% and the 20-city composite off 4.0% from its April 2010 levels.

Home improvement giant Lowe's is showing a sensitive side through a merchandising effort spotted in a Tampa, Fla., store. The store is promoting flowers -- "a gift as special as she is," according to the display's signage -- next to grills and fasteners. 

A conspicuous pink and red island display near the front of the store has racks of bromeliads, anthuriums and orchids. A bilingual sign reads: "Surprise her with the gift of plants."

Another term could be "patriotic."

The modular home currently residing in the IBS Show Village in the parking lot outside the Orange County Convention Center here in Orlando will soon be shipped away to a veteran in need through the Rebuilding Together charity and Sears' Heroes at Home.

The Time Person of the Year is Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. But who is the Tile Person of the Year?

The answer is John Canto of Canto Tile & Stone in Tampa, Fla. The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) presented him with the Tile Person of the Year award at the industry’s Total Solutions Plus Conference.

Canto served four years as the association’s regional director in the late 90s. He served as NTCA president from 2006 to 2008 and chairman of the board from 2008 to 2010.
