Midwest building products distributor Arrowhead Building Supply is preparing for the grand opening of its new facility -- an 8,000-sq.-ft. showroom in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

Located just 15 miles from St. Louis, the facility will be the seven-unit company’s easternmost distributor. Arrowhead serves contractors in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

St. Louis-based distributor Huttig Building Products was lifted by modest improvement in home construction in the third quarter.

The company posted nets sales of $174.5 million in the quarter, a 14% improvement over the same quarter last year.

St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products hired Bob Kern Sr. as the new territory manager to cover southern New Jersey from the Huttig Wilkes-Barre branch in Pennsylvania. 

Kern has more than 20 years of experience in the building materials industry. He started his career with Peter Lumber Company in Pleasantville, New Jersey, where he was the operations manager for many years. Most recently, Kern was territory manager with Milliken Millwork.

St. Louis, Missouri-based Huttig Building Products named Ken Schmitt as regional VP of the Northeast. 

In his new role, Schmitt will be responsible for Huttig locations in Augusta and Saco, Maine; Newington, Connecticut; Taunton, Massachusetts;  Hooksett, New hampshire and Selkirk, N.Y.

St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products expanded its borrowing capacity.

The domestic distributor of millwork, building materials and wood products announced it entered a deal to amend and extend its $120 million senior secured credit facility.

"We believe the amended facility will enhance our financial flexibility and provide greater liquidity to support our business growth,” said Philip W. Keipp, Huttig’s VP and CFO.

Huttig Building Products reported net sales for the fourth quarter of $134.8 million, up from $125.6 million the year before. The net loss for the quarter was $400,000, an improvement over 2012's fourth-quarter loss of $2.8 million.

IKEA said this week that it is submitting plans for a St. Louis, Mo., store.

The application marks the beginning of the governmental approval process, which is expected to lead to the opening sometime in fall 2015. The closest IKEA stores to the proposal are the Chicago-area stores in Bolingbrook, Ill., and Schaumburg, Ill. Additionally, a Kansas City-area store is under construction and on track to open fall 2014 in Merriam, Kan.

The common stock of St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products has been approved for listing on the NASDAQ Capital Market exchange. 

“We are pleased to take this step forward in our commitment to build shareholder value,” said Jon Vrabely, Huttig president and CEO.

Huttig’s shares under the ticker symbol “HBP” will begin trading on NASDAQ on Dec. 9. Previously, Huttig was traded over the counter.

St. Louis-based Gardex is now offering a product for the biggest cleanup projects. The company’s Gardex Disaster Clean-Up Rake is designed to attack heavy, wet debris from hurricanes, tornadoes or flooding.

The made-in-USA rake features 22 heavy, round stiff wire tines and double-bolted construction.

St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products reported sales growth of 9% in the third quarter ended Sept. 30.

Huttig reported income from continuing operations of $3.2 million in 2013 compared with $3.7 million in 2012, which included a $2.4 million gain on disposal of assets.

In partnership with St. Louis-based digital agency Infuz, developed the tool in response to the wealth of new lighting technologies that enhance (and complicate) bulb selection in the 21st century. Users can shop by selecting the shape of their bulb and a handful of other selection criteria, which then narrows their search using a filtering methodology.

Calling AZEK “one of the best brands in our industry today,” Huttig will distribute the trim, deck and porch (among others) products from its branches in Hooksett, N.H.; Augusta, Maine; Newington, Conn.; and Selkirk, N.Y.

St. Louis-based Huttig Building Products reported second quarter sales of $148.9 million, up from $137.8 million in the same quarter last year.

Net income also showed an increase in the three months ended June 30 -- up from $1.6 million last year to $2.6 million. 

Huttig distributes building products through 27 distribution centers serving 41 states. Customers are building material dealers, national buying groups, home centers and others.

SummerWinds Garden Centers is a Boise, Idaho-based high-end retailer of garden and nursery products. SummerWinds operates retail nurseries in the Silicon Valley of California; Phoenix; and St. Louis. The retailer says it appeals to both the serious and casual gardener with a broad selection of premium gardening products and knowledgeable staff.

Home improvement retailer Menards has decided not to open a store in O'Fallon, Mo., because of President Barack Obama's economic policies, according to a company spokesman interviewed on KMOV, a Missouri television station. 

Menards, based in Eau Claire, Wis., had planned to open several stores in the St. Louis market over the next six months.

Energizer Holdings has announced a multi-year restructuring plan designed to save the company approximately $200 million, improve profitability and drive long-term growth. The St. Louis, Mo.-based manufacturer expects that a substantial portion of the actions necessary to achieve the targeted savings should be completed by the end of fiscal 2014 and the total savings are expected to be fully realized in fiscal 2015.
