Builders FirstSource is getting down to business in order to better serve various Texas markets: one, through the opening of a new distribution facility in Conroe, Texas; and two, through the relocation of its existing San Antonio facility.

The new San Antonio location is in Schertz, Texas, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown. The 90,000-sq.-ft. warehouse and office space will be abutted by a few outside storage sheds. It will initially distribute dimensional lumber and lumber sheet goods, as well as doors and millwork in the near future.

The APA-The Engineered Wood Association recognized the Metriguard president with a Bronson J. Lewis award at its Annual Meeting this year.

Jim Logan, owner and president of Pullman, Washington-based Metriguard Inc., was honored during the event in San Antonio, Texas, this past November, where APA chairman Tom Temple introduced him as "[a true] pioneer in the engineered wood products industry."

Logan and Metriguard have been a part of the engineered wood industry for 42 years, providing equipment to aid in the production and testing of lumber, veneer and panels.

Sarno’s past experience includes positions at Interline Brands and W.W. Granger. According to the company, Sarno has deep experience in the wholesale and distribution industries. 

The company made the announcement at its recent Fall Market in San Antonio.

Freud America announced its Freud/Diablo business was awarded the 2014 Accessory Supplier of the Year from Sphere 1, a cooperative of independent tool, fastener and concrete accessory distributors. 

This award was given to Freud/Diablo during Sphere 1’s Annual Member Meeting in San Antonio in recognition for Diablo‘s performance in sales, service, program execution and product innovation.

MoistureShield, the Springdale, Ark.-based composite decking manufacturer, has expanded its presence in the Sunbelt and West Coast regions by adding 12 new distribution locations to its network.

Among the new distributors are Huttig Building Products in Phoenix, Nashville, and Jackson, Miss.; BlueLinx in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville, Fla.; Dixie Plywood and Lumber Company in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas; Universal Forest Products in Thornton and Riverside, Calif.; and Intermountain Supply in Spokane, Wash.

San Antonio-based J.P. Hart Lumber Company joined the portfolio of Cornerstone Building Alliance.

Cornerstone is the acquisition-oriented LBM management company run by former Stock Building Supply leaders Fenton Hord and Steve Short. The press release announcing the deal described the acquisition as a partnership that includes Hart, Hart Components and Hart Building Solutions.

Is Tile Shop the fastest-growing specialty building product retailer in the country? Or does it just seem like it?

In the span of a month, Tile Shop locations cropped up in Tulsa, Danbury, San Antonio and Oklahoma City. And since it went public in August 2012, the Minneapolis-based retailer has been expanding aggressively. Twenty stores opened in 2013, debuting in new markets amid a beefed-up corporate infrastructure.

The Tile Shop has announced its plans to open its first-ever super store in San Antonio.

This entails a 31,200-sq.ft. space -- its biggest in the country -- which compares with its usual average of 23,000-sq.-ft. retail locations. The super store will feature a selection of 4,500 stone and tile products.

Carl Randazzo, SVP retail for The Tile Shop, said that the additional square footage allows for an expansion of the retailer's product presentation.

SAN ANTONIO — Doug Miller has taken the reins of Handy Hardware at a critical juncture. The last several months have seen the failure of a distribution center, bankruptcy proceedings, loss of member equity and a private equity takeover.

Into the fray jumps Miller, an executive who grew up in the hardware business (his dad owned a store) and never left it. Miller retired from Spokane, Wash.-based Jensen Distribution at the end of last year, and came out of retirement to lead Handy.

Guadalupe Lumber in San Antonio has a reputation for its eclectic product mix. “Jackets, boots and all sorts of stuff,” said Kyle Grothues, fourth-generation general manager of the three-store hardware home center retailer. “We ended up with a lot of statues of the Virgin Mary one year.”

And the results? “We sold all of them.”

The ability to seize merchandise opportunities is one of the common themes among the crop of 2013 Hardware Store All-Stars.

Frank Denny, a home center retailing pioneer, died July 2.

Credited for creating a sort of industry standard for warehouse home centers, Denny was president of W.R. Grace and Co.'s home center division. When Kmart bought Home Centers of America in 1984, Denny was tapped to oversee its expansion under the brand name Builders Square.

A message from Denny's family said he died Monday morning, "after the usual tough fight he was known for throughout his career." He was 79.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Annual Conference has been set for Sept. 17-19, 2013, in San Antonio. 

According to its website, the SFI is based on principles promoting sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.

The 2012 conference was held in Milwaukee.

Handy Hardware Wholesales San Antonio market, Aug. 10 to 12, saw an attendance increase of 11.2% over 2011, the Houston-based hardware co-op reported. 

Handy gave away six Toyota Tundra trucks during the market weekend, and it expects warehouse sales from the event will be at an all-time high, said Mickey Schulte, VP marketing and purchasing.

Dow Powerhouse announced a major new collaboration with Imagine Homes, a San Antonio-based home builder, to offer Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingle roof system to all new home buyers in Imagine Homes' six San Antonio-area residential communities.

Additionally, Dow Powerhouse will be a standard feature on all homes in the Willis Ranch community, scheduled to open in September 2012.

San Antonio — The layoffs, bankruptcies, pay cuts and long hours that have cast a pall over the industry for the last several years were pushed aside for three days last month as LBM executives gathered here to greet old friends, catch up on gossip, and maybe learn a thing or two about how to run a better business. The 2011 ProDealer Industry Summit, co-sponsored by the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) and Home Channel News, hosted 100-plus pro dealers and LBM distributors from more than 65 companies Oct. 26 to 28.

San Antonio — TW Perry CEO Michael Cassidy accepted a plaque recognizing his company’s achievements, shook hands with the event’s sponsor, smiled for a photograph and approached the podium. 

What followed was a Pro Dealer of the Year Award acceptance speech and, eventually, a standing ovation.
