The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) weighed in the Commerce Department’s monthly sales figures, which showed a return to positive numbers.

Monthly retail sales figures for July totaled $403.9 billion, an increase of 0.8% over the previous month, and 4.1% over July 2011.

The U.S. Census Bureau announced that advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for June, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $401.5 billion, down 0.5% from the previous month, but 3.8% above June 2011.

Total sales for the April through June 2012 period were up 4.7% from the same period a year ago.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) urged the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance to reach a contract agreement well in advance of the Sept. 30 deadline in order to prevent a disruption to the flow of goods.

The ongoing labor negotiations affect 14 East and Gulf Coast ports, which together account for 95% of all containerized shipments to the Eastern seaboard.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is calling on the U.S. Congress to step in to avert a work stoppage that would disrupt retail supply chains during the holiday shopping season and well into 2012. A breakdown in negotiations between the National Railway Labor Conference and railroad negotiators could lead to a nationwide shutdown on Dec. 6, according to a press release issued by the Arlington, Va., trade group.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) and CargoNet have announced the establishment of an exclusive strategic alliance with the shared goal of combating the growing problem of cargo theft across the retail industry.

According to the 2010 United States Cargo Theft Report issued by CargoNet, reported incidences of cargo theft increased by 50% in 2010 compared with 2009. The FBI identifies cargo theft as a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) announced the addition of two new members to its board of directors following the board's semi-annual board of directors meeting Jan. 16 in Sarasota, Fla.

Newly named to the RILA board of directors were Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart Stores, and Steven Preston, president and CEO of OakLeaf Waste Management. Simon replaces Eduardo Castro-Wright, Walmart vice chairman and president and CEO of Global eCommerce and Global Sourcing.
