Every community is a living organism -- and existing as an integral part of its body, there's almost always a hardware store of All-Star caliber.

HCN's fourth annual list of Hardware Store All-Stars recognizes hardware stores that are a reflection and outgrowth of their surroundings -- so much so that they often anticipate the needs of customers before being asked.

HCN Daily will profile the honorees, moving across the map of the United States from East to West -- continuing this week with Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Installed Building Products, a major insulation installer based in Columbus, Ohio, is expanding its Midwestern presence through the acquisition of Installed Building Solutions, LLC ("IBS").

Farmington, Minnesota-based IBS is an installer of fiberglass insulation, spray foam insulation and waterproofing products that serves burgeoning markets throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota.

Grand Forks, North Dakota-based Acme Tools flexed its digital muscles with the opening of a new distribution center for its online business.

Acme Tools, described as a leading authorized online retailer of tools and equipment, announced the start of business operations at its new distribution center in Grand Forks, in support of its growing Internet sales division.

Beloit, Wisconsin-based building products distributor ABC Supply Co., will open its first North Dakota location. 

The official opening date for the Fargo store is Aug. 18.

Fargo, N.D.-based Integrity from Marvin Windows and Doors introduced a new Wood-Ultrex Insert Double Hung. 

The company says the instant-replacement-window product combines the strength of Ultrex pultruded fiberglass, beautiful wood interiors and a fit for any opening, 

Insert windows are designed for applications where an older window is not performing, but a full frame replacement isn’t needed.

The Home Depot opened a new store in Minot, N.D., one of only a handful of new store openings in the United States for the world's largest home improvement retailer in recent years.

The 104,000-sq.-ft. store with a 17,000-sq.-ft. garden center also operates an outdoor lumberyard measuring 96,000 sq. ft. 

The store is the second Home Depot in North Dakota, the other being in Fargo, about four hours away. In the United States, the new store brings the Home Depot store count to 1,978, according to the store count stats on the company's website.

Now in its third year, HCN's annual list of high performers recognizes hardware stores -- one from each state -- that are outstanding in their field. The complete list and analysis can be found in the September issue of HCN. Meanwhile, HCN Daily will work its way across the country with mini profiles, continuing this week with North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Bart and Diana Tyler, proprieters of Kelloggs & Lawrence in Katonah, N.Y., and DeWayne Tripp, owner of Hinton (Okla.) Hardware joined an elite crowd in 2013: HCN Hardware Store All-Stars. Their stores made the list, along with 48 other worthy retailers, one from each state.

A recently released report by IHS Global Insight shows how far away U.S. states are from peak employment and the distance each one must travel to reach pre-recession job levels. According to U.S. regional economist Steven Frable of IHS Global, only four states have been able to reach or surpass their previous employment peaks. All four are beneficiaries of the current energy boom: Alaska, North Dakota, Texas and Louisiana. Some states, though -- notably New York -- are less than 1% away from reaching peak employment.

Allied Building Products Corp., a division of Oldcastle, has completed its acquisition of United Products Corp., a privately held roofing and siding distributor based in Minneapolis. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Founded in 1925, United was purchased in 1975 by Al and Char Hatfield, who grew the business to 15 branches across five states; seven in Minnesota, three each in Wisconsin and North Dakota, and one each in South Dakota and Nebraska.

CoreLogic, a provider of information, analytics and business services, has reported that home prices in the United States decreased 0.4% on a month-over-month basis, the first monthly decline in four months. According to CoreLogic, national home prices, including distressed sales, also declined on a year-over-year basis by 4.4% in August 2011 compared with August 2010. This follows a decline of 4.8% in July 2011 compared with July 2010.
