Looking at the big picture, a panel of lumberyard operators shared what they felt was the most important part of that relationship.

In a word, the main thing they need from a supplier: “commitment.”

Following the unveiling of the list June 22, TW Perry president and CEO Michael Cassidy told employees that being a winning team helps morale.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. recognized seven vendors for their superior commitment and service to the hardware cooperative, its retailers and customers at the 2014 Spring Convention and Exhibits held February 24-26 in Houston.

This year’s collection of Ace Vendor of the Year award winners are:

Pittsburgh-based Snavely Forest Products said it’s not going to let the “modified” lumber movement lose its momentum.

In response to Eastman Chemical’s recent announcement that it would cease the manufacturing of Perennial Wood products -- the trade name for acetylated wood -- Snavely Forest Products announced today that it will continue to market the high-performance decking product.

You meet some interesting people in the home improvement industry. Here’s another one: Jared Littmann, the 41-year-old youth sports coach; lawyer; Annapolis, Md., assemblyman; owner of K&B True Value in Annapolis; and — most recently — True Value board member.

Littmann spoke to HCN just before the K&B True Value Hardware Art Show (see it at opened its doors.

After serving on the board of directors for several years, Paula Calimafde has been named the new executive director of the Small Business Legislative Council.

Calimafde is a principal with Bethesda, Md., law firm Paley Rothman. She replaces John Satagaj, who retired. 

The SBLC is a non-profit group representing the interests of small privately owned businesses in several areas, including taxation and health care.

Jared S. Littmann, a co-owner of K&B True Value in Annapolis, Md., was recently appointed to the board of directors for True Value Co. 

Formerly an associate county attorney, Littmann brings a wealth of experience to the board of directors, including his service on the Annapolis City Council as an alderman, chair of the Environmental Matters Committee, and member of the Housing and Human Welfare Committee.

These cordless tools are powered by the Black & Decker extended runtime 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Battery, and include a 1/2 Inch Drill/Driver, Impact Driver, Reciprocating Saw, and Circular Saw.

Beloit, Wis.-based building products distributor ABC Supply Co., Inc. acquired the distribution assets of Sellmore Industries, a distributor of steep-slope roofing, siding and windows with locations in Baltimore; Philadelphia; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Hagerstown, Md.

“These four new locations will expand and strengthen ABC Supply’s existing presence in these markets,” said ABC CEO David Luck.

On the heels of its successful first season, A Few Cool Hardware Stores will be launching the second installment of its Made in D.C. program, which is expanding to the co-op's four Maryland locations as a separate program called Made in Maryland.

The Ace Hardware dealer initially developed the program in response to demand for locally sourced products. In partnership with Think Local First D.C., owners Marc Friedman and Gina Schaefer beta launched the program in April 2013 to help support the local economy and encourage creative entrepreneurship in the D.C. area.

Technology’s impact on the recruiting process is having both positive and negative effects on employers of all sizes. Bob Corlett, president of Olney, Md.-based recruiting firm Staffing Advisors, says subtle changes in job-seeker behavior have left many small businesses in the dust when it comes to catching the eye of top talent.

At the same time, employers large and small are missing out on connecting with qualified candidates by not embracing mobile applications, which are increasingly being used by those on the hunt for new gigs.
