Though Plum Creek Timber Company reported modest sales gains in the third quarter of 2014, the company's outlook for future growth is tempered by a conservative (and realistic) forecast for housing starts, according to the building products supplier.

Housing starts are expected to increase by only 8% in 2014, leading the company to place residential construction activity at a growth rate of about 10% in 2015.

Indianapolis -- Do it Best Corp. distributed more than a $100 million in member rebates during the co-op's annual shareholders meeting Sunday night. 

It was the 11th consecutive year of $100 million-plus rebates, and another chance for CEO Bob Taylor to present his state-of-the company report -- emphasis on members growing their business and overcoming challenges.

Hearth & Home Technologies is recalling a number of its gas fireplaces, gas stoves, gas inserts and log sets, citing a tendency for the gas valve to leak.

The recall affects about 20,000 units of Heat-N-Glo, Heatilator, Outdoor Lifestyles and Quadra Fire products, which encompass both natural and propane gas indoor and outdoor fireplaces, stoves, inserts and log sets.

Houston, Texas-based Goodman Company is recalling about 233,500 units of its Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, Goodman and York International Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (“PTAC”) units.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the power cords on the units have displayed a tendency to overheat, creating burn and fire hazards.

So far, there have been five reports of the power cords smoking or catching fire, though no injuries have been reported as of yet.

Masonite International Corporation announced steady sales growth of 8.2% and a net profit for the second quarter of 2014, putting the company back in the black after it suffered a loss in the same quarter last year.

Net sales increased by $37.1 million to a total of $490.2 million for the three months ended June 29. Masonite largely attributed the growth to a 5.5% increase in average unit price and a 3.4% increase in unit volumes.

Net income came in at $5.6 million, up from 2013's loss of $1.2 million.

After explosions and fire rocked a Plum Creek MDF facility in Columbia Falls, Montana on June 10, the company announced that production has resumed again.

Employees were all safely evacuated, with no reported injuries. An investigation determined that a mechanical failure caused the fire. There is also an estimated $8 million to $10 million worth of damage at the plant.

A day after explosions set its Columbia Falls, Montana plant on fire, Plum Creek Timber Company is starting to pick up the pieces.

Nearby residents reported two or three loud blasts around 3 p.m. Tuesday, though the cause of the explosions is as of yet undetermined.

It took fire and emergency officials all afternoon to quell the fire, but fortunately, all workers were safely led outside without sustaining any major injuries. A few were treated on-site for smoke inhalation.

The home improvement industry called Las Vegas home for three days in May. That’s when the National Hardware Show was in town, kicking off with a marching band and confetti explosion on Tuesday morning May 6.

The National Hardware Show cleverly promoted itself as 15 shows in 1 in 2014, with new areas of emphasis — emergency preparedness and energy efficiency among them. The event’s popular Tailgate section, which has grown steadily over the years, was back with more activities, and a soon-to-be announced Tailgate product of the year.

Home Depot's 11-day savings event known as Spring Black Friday is back with a twist this year -- organizers have taken steps to include the pro customers. 

This year's Spring Black Friday event, which kicked off April 3 and marks the beginning of the home improvement industry's busiest season, will have sales on  grills, lawn supplies and gardening products as usual. But it will also include power tools, nailers/compressors, concrete, ladders and landscape timber.
