Home appliance manufacturer Jenn-Air announced this week that it would be the Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival’s appliance sponsor this year.

From Aug. 21 to 24, the company’s products will be on display at fourth annual festival’s cooking demonstrations and at the LA Studio Center, where the festival’s Grand Tasting will be housed. It will also be hosting a wine event every night of the festival where attendees can mingle with chefs and make use of a photo booth at the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

The 3-D printer movement got a boost months ago when Home Depot began offering 3-D printers and scanners for sale through its website.

Now the world’s largest home improvement retailer is bringing the products to shelves in select markets. Home Depot is introducing MakerBot 3-D printers and scanners in select stores in Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The paint industry has proved generally successful in court, dodging expensive lead-paint related rulings.

But not in California. Not Monday.

A judge in Santa Clara County Superior Court ruled that paint companies must pay $1.1 billion to 10 California cites and counties -- including Los Angeles County -- as part of a lead removal program. Millions of older homes will be involved in the treatment.

Vulcan Materials Company, a producer of construction aggregates, asphalt mix, concrete and cement, has commenced mine development at a major new source of reserves in California.

The Azusa Rock Quarry, located east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, contains over 100 million tons of quality granite aggregate, enough to help Vulcan supply California infrastructure projects for "decades to come," according to the company.

Budgets for pay raises at U.S. employers have picked up from all-time lows, going from an average (mean) of 2.2 percent in 2009 to 2.9 percent in 2013, according to the 40th annual WorldatWork 2013-2014 Salary Budget Survey. U.S. salary budgets have averaged 2.8 percent for the past two years.

According to the First Republic Prestige Home Index issued by First Republic Bank, luxury home values in certain niche California markets experienced strong growth in the second quarter.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, values were up 10.9% year-over-year, as well as 5.0% since the first quarter. Los Angeles homes rose 6.1% since 2012's second quarter, as well as 3.3% since last quarter. In the San Diego region, values were up 8.0% on a year-ago basis and 4.9% since last quarter.

Los Angeles-based KB Home reported a second quarter net loss of $24.1 million, compared with a net loss of $68.5 million in the year-earlier quarter.

For the second quarter ended May 31, revenues totaled $302.9 million, up 11% from $271.7 million for the second quarter of 2011. The company pointed to an increase in the number of homes delivered and a higher average selling price.

Beacon Roofing Supply, one of the nation’s largest distributors of roofing and other exterior building products, has acquired Structural Materials, Co., a distributor of residential and commercial roofing products. Headquartered in Santa Ana, Calif., Structural has six locations in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The 64-year-old company had total annual sales of approximately $81 million in 2011.

The California Supreme Court, on April 12, 2012, issued a long-awaited ruling in the case of Brinker Restaurant v. Superior Court (No. S166350), concluding that employers only have to provide meal periods to workers, not make sure employees actually take them.

“An employer must relieve the employee of all duty for the designated period, but need not ensure that the employee does no work,” Associate Justice Kathryn Werdegar wrote for the unanimous court in a 54-page opinion.
