Electrolux CEO Keith McLoughlin has three major reasons for believing that the company’s deal to acquire GE Appliances will position his company to succeed in an increasingly global and competitive industry.

He shared those reasons, along with additional “flavor” on the $3.3 billion appliance mega deal, shortly after its announcement.

Electrolux agreed to acquire the appliances business of General Electric for a cash consideration of $3.3 billion.

The announcement was made early Monday morning. 

According to Electrolux, the deal enhances Electrolux’s position as a global player in home appliances, offering an opportunity to invest in innovation and growth, and is a particularly attractive strategic fit in North America.

Electrolux president and CEO Keith McLoughlin reflected on the company's progress during the second fiscal quarter, pointing to prospects for growth.

However, net sales decreased by about 4.9% year-over-year, totaling $26.3 billion for the three-month period. That decrease was slightly smaller for the six-month period -- 2.0%.

Meanwhile, the company posted a net loss of $92 million for the quarter. For the first six months, the company's net income of $339 million compares to net income of $1.003 billion for the same six-month period last year.

Swedish appliance manufacturer Electrolux reported a 5.9% sales increase in its third quarter, with sales of 27.1 billion Swedish krona, or $4.1 billion.

“In the third quarter, Electrolux recorded a significant year-on-year improvement in its sales and earnings despite considerable uncertainty in markets across the globe,” said CEO Keith McLoughlin.

All business areas with the exception of Europe achieved an operating margin above 6%.
