On a night when the Republican Party earned a majority in the Senate, and expanded their majority in the House of Representatives, candidates with deep ties to the home improvement and building material industry had mixed results.
Ace Hardware affiliate Klinker's Lumber & Building Supply of Waverly City, Ohio, was recognized by the state's House of Representatives for opening a new paint studio in May.
The store's paint studio — essentially a remodeled and rethought version of its paint section — now sells Valspar paints, including their Aspire and Professional line of paints, in addition to the Ace line of paint. The paint studio will also allow employees to mix custom paint colors to match customers' color palettes.
The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association is calling on pro dealers to tell Congress that the industry needs "E-fairness."
In an NLBMDA alert, the association raised the volume on its call for the approval of the Marketplace Fairness Act, which is making the rounds in the House of Representatives. The legislation would level the playing field between local retailers like lumberyards and out-of-state Internet retailers.
The National Retail Federation's SVP, David French, has released a statement welcoming the House's passage of H.R. 3309, also known as the Innovation Act, which seeks to protect retailers against patent trolls.
“The National Retail Federation is pleased that the House has strongly supported the enactment of the patent litigation reform," said French. "This has been and continues to be a top priority for the retail industry and our diverse membership."

“There is no need for a better ‘test kit,’ as highly reliable and affordable X-Ray Fluorescence technology has been in use for decades. There are many consultants who have XRF machines, and lead inspections are inexpensive. XRF testing produces no damage, while ‘test kits’ and chip sampling involves producing widely scattered damage (12 to 15 sample locations for a typical room in a house).
