Fitch Ratings' latest Chalk Line report for Fall 2013 emphasized the continued strength of the housing recovery, despite recent setbacks such as the government shutdown and increased mortgage rates.

"Still low absolute mortgage rates and home prices well below former highs in most markets suggest that affordability is still attractive," said Fitch managing director Robert Curran. "Recent government struggles, negative equity and challenging mortgage qualification standards appear to be little more than short-term headwinds restraining the housing recovery."

The latest Fitch Ratings report sees a pick-up for the non-residential construction sector, beginning this year but accelerating in 2014.

Fitch expects private non-residential construction to grow 2% in 2013 and 5% in 2014 thanks to increased lending and CMBS issuance. Meanwhile, public construction spending is predicted to remain largely stable this year and grow 3% in 2014.

Fitch Ratings has offered up an analysis of June's low housing starts figures, postulating that sudden drop of 9.9% is just a symptom of the "fits and starts" modality of the housing recovery.

Though the drop was mainly spearheaded by a 26.7% drop in multifamily starts, Fitch highlighted that multifamily figures have been performing hairpin turns for the past several months.

Fitch Rating, one of the nation’s leading credit rating services, has reassessed its outlook on Home Depot and Lowe’s following the retailers’ recent third-quarter earnings releases.

Home Depot received a boost to A- staus, maintaining its stable outlook, based on the Atlanta retailer’s operating momentum, strong cash flow and positive comp-store sales in seven of the past eight quarters. 

Home Depot’s shares recently traded at $37.12. Its market capitalization is $57.16 billion
