The family of John William Bacon announced his passing on Nov. 13 at the age of 84.

A native of San Mateo, California, Bacon was a lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay area whose lumber-industry career began in the early 1950s at San Bruno Lumber Company. 

He later purchased South City Lumber & Supply, Economy Lumber Company of Oakland, and Piedmont Lumber. 

He died at his home in Atherton, California. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; seven children, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Leeds, Alabama-based Marvin’s Building Materials and Home Centers is adding to its fleet of mid-sized home centers that serve the Southern home builder and the homeowner.

The store in Ozark, Alabama, is currently under construction and is expected to open in the spring of 2015. When completed, the Alabama chain will operate 28 stores. The store will feature a 30,000-sq.-ft. home center in addition to an attached lawn and garden center and drive-through lumberyard.

Barclay Simpson, founder of Simpson Manufacturing and a leading figure in the world of structural connectors, died in his sleep Nov. 9. He was 93 years old. 

"He was beloved by his family, friends and colleagues," reads the announcement of his death from Pleasanton, California-based Simpson Manufacturing.

Cemex CEO Lorenzo Zambrano, who is credited with turning his family's business into Mexico's first sprawling multinational company, has died unexpectedly at age 70.

Zambrano was on a business trip in Madrid and was said to have died of natural causes on Monday, according to multiple media reports.

Zambrano is famous for his role in globalizing the company and putting Mexico on the map as a competitive force, drawing both admirers of his ambition and critics of his competition-squashing tactics.

Atchison, Kan.-based hardware distributor Blish-Mize Co. announced that Jonathan D. Mize has been appointed CEO, succeeding his father, John H. Mize. 

For the past few years, the younger Mize has served as president and COO and previously served in other officer capacities. He will be the fifth generation of the Mize family to hold the title of CEO. He also serves as president & COO of Hardware House, a subsidiary of Blish-Mize Co.
