The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Whirlpool's HybridCare Heat Pump Duet Dryer with a 2014 Energy Star Emerging Technology Award, which is granted to products that advance the causes of energy efficiency and emission reduction while maintaining high standards of functionality.

The HybridCare dryer works by regenerating energy during the drying cycle. Rather than venting the air like most dryers, the HybridCare uses a refrigeration system to dry and recycle the air. This leads to more than the 40% in energy savings required by Emerging Technology Award standards.

Whirlpool Corporation has earned the first and only (for now) Energy Star certification for the clothes dryer category, now on the market as the Duet model WED87HED steam dryer.

The Duet dryer combines moisture sensors with dual element modulation technology to arrive at an energy-efficient drying cycle that uses no more heat (and runs for no more time) than is required. Beyond conserving energy, it also helps preserve fabrics.

The Home Depot has launched a nationwide campaign to bring water conservation savvy to the masses, especially those in drought-affected areas.

On April 26, the retailer will hold free Water Conservation Workshops at all 1,977 of its U.S. locations, where attendees can learn ten different strategies for saving water.

These projects include converting to a dual-flush toilet, switching to EPA WaterSense labeled showerheads and faucets, installing drip irrigation and rotary nozzle or dual spray sprinklers and more.

For the first time in 20 years, a company has declined to voluntarily implement the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) risk mitigation measures for a pesticide product. And that company, Reckitt Benckiser, makers of the d-CON branded mouse and rat poison products, said it has done nothing wrong, and would rather fight than switch.

And so goes this cat-and-mouse game that will eventually be decided by the courts.
