According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice, Lowe's has agreed to settle its lead paint case for $500,000 and to implement a new compliance program at all 1,700+ locations nationwide.

The settlement is a response to an EPA investigation that found that Lowe's lacked the documentation to prove it had abided by the agency's regulations when hiring contractors in nine states or using EPA-approved lead paint testing kits. The EPA was originally tipped off by comments and complaints from the public.

International Paper (IP) announced that it has extended the Department of Justice’s review period with respect to the company’s acquisition of Temple-Inland. The new deadline has been moved from Jan. 27 to Feb. 13.

In a prepared statement, IP chairman and CEO John Faraci said: "We have been working constructively with the DOJ to address its concerns and anticipate entering into a definitive agreement on terms that are acceptable to all parties."

Home improvement retailer Lowe’s has agreed to settle a Justice Department claim that it terminated an employee without just cause after he returned from serving in the Iraq War. The consent decree, which still requires approval by a U.S. District Court in Portland, Ore., requires that Lowe’s pay the employee, Matthew King, $45,000 for back pay and liquidated damages.

Lowe’s did not respond to a request for comments.

The Home Depot named Teresa Wynn Roseborough executive VP, general counsel and corporate secretary. She will join the company’s senior leadership team and report to Frank Blake, chairman and CEO. 

Roseborough will be responsible for leading The Home Depot’s legal department, as well as its government relations and corporate security services functions. She will assume her new role Nov. 7.
