After receiving reports of hot liquid escaping from MINI Plus Brewing System units during use, Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (Keurig) said it contacted the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada to begin the process for a voluntary recall. 

The company has received about 200 incident reports related to the approximately 7.2 million MINI Plus units in the U.S. and Canada.

Dr. BJ Yeh has been named chairman of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) 1369 Technical Committee on Wood-Based Panels.

The Committee puts out four national consensus standards on plywood and oriented strand board in Canada: CSA O121 Candian Douglas Fir Plywood, CSA O151 Canadian Softwood Plywood, CSA O153 Poplar Plywood and CSA O325 Construction Sheathing.

Yeh is also director of technical services for APA-The Engineered Wood Association, which sponsors CSA standards on wood structural panels and structural glued laminated timber.

Bona has maintained a presence in several markets for the past few years, including its line of professional products in Canada, but the new move will increase its footprint and bring new products to the fore.

Valspar has completed its acquisition of Madison Chemical Industries, Inc., a coatings manufacturer based in Ontario, Canada.

Madison was originally founded in 1975 and has been pumping out coatings for a range of applications since, up to and including water transmission pipelines, water and wastewater management and potable water storage.

New Holland, Pennsylvania-based Superior Walls of America is now "of America" -- and then some.

The producer of precast concrete insulated wall systems has expanded its operations into Canada with two new licensees that will be manufacturing precast concrete foundation systems.

Superior Walls Alberta (located near Calgary) will be offering Superior Walls Xi products throughout Alberta, and Superior Walls by Magnis (based in Beausejour) will provide Superior Walls Xi Plus throughout Manitoba.

At least one industry analyst thinks that the outlook for lawn and garden involves a lot of green, upward-pointing thumbs.

GE Capital’s Commercial Distribution Finance business, which provides financing to the industry, predicts good things ahead. Even though 2014 saw its fair share of weather disruptions, dealer financing volume is up 9% year-over-year in the United States and 12% in Canada, according to company data.

The Merit Distribution Group will acquire Dynamic Paint Products, a 40-year-old family-owned distributor and manufacturer of paint-related products based out of Toronto, Canada.

The companies announced the deal early Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed.

Originally named Mumby and Associates, Dynamic mainly served the Toronto area, but over the years has seen exponential growth throughout Canada. Dynamic’s brand of paint-related products are currently sold throughout the world.

The Edwards (ESL) and Interlogix brands are recalling 33 models of their 400 and 500 series smoke alarms, citing a tendency to malfunction.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the alarms have been found to fail to alert consumers of a fire due to radio frequency interference.

There have yet to be any incidents or injuries reported, however.

The Devine Contact Collection of luxury vinyl flooring is now available at Lowe's locations throughout Canada.

The flooring product, which offers the additional sales proposition of easy installation with a patented adhesive backing, is also currently distributed through Wanke Cascade in the Western U.S. The product is not on the shelves in Lowe’s U.S. stores.

Appliance parts distributor Marcone Canada hired Peter Szachlewicz as its first president. 

Marcone Supply, the company's U.S. counterpart, established a presence in Canada with its 2010 buyout of APWagner. Since that time, Marcone Canada has experienced growth in both its retail and wholesale operations, the company said, selling authorized OEM appliance parts, HVAC components and property maintenance supplies.

A June weather report from Planalytics pointed to a number of ways in which last month's weather events boosted store sales across the country.

For example, both Father's Day and Independence Day were at their coolest in years; with the exception of heavy rainfall and the presence of Hurricane Arthur in the Northeast, cool and dry conditions created favorable conditions for outdoor activities.

Although temperatures in the U.S. and Canada tended to be on the warmer side, the U.S. was still cooler than it was last June, though Canada had its warmest June since 2006.

Ontario, Canada-based Wolf Steel is recalling several of its Napolean-model propane gas fireplaces, citing a laceration hazard.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the glass front has displayed a tendency to break due to the pressure from the propane gas igniting.

There has been one reported incident so far in Canada, in which a customer had to seek medical attention after getting cuts to the face and neck. No incidents have been reported in the U.S.

 The Sears Holdings empire plans a strategic retreat from Canada.

In a three-sentence announcement released Wednesday morning, Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp. said it is "exploring strategic alternatives for its 51% interest in Sears Canada, including a potential sale of Sears Holdings' interest or Sears Canada as a whole." 

The company said it plans to hire an investment bank to help with the sale. It didn't say which firm.

Citing a tendency for the metal housing and lens to separate from the bulb's base and fall, Satco Products is recalling several thousand of its KolourOne LED Light Bulbs.

The recall affects about 119,000 units in the U.S. and 2,350 in Canada of the KolourOne Brand Panel Array 2.0 and DUO 2.0 PAR 30 and 38 LED Light Bulbs.

Four reports have been received of the bulb components separating and falling, but no injuries have yet been reported.

Catlett kicked off the HIRI conference with a quick look at Target's disappointing venture into Canada. The Minnesota-based retailer's efforts to change the way Canadians shop has fallen short, she said, partly because the company missed consumer and cultural cues.

The maker of kitchen and bathroom cabinetry in the United States and Canada completed its initial public offering in the fourth quarter, in which sales reached $80.5 million.
