Pulte Homes has signed on as the builder of a new 1,956-sq.-ft. home addition for Aimee Copeland, the young woman who developed a rare bacterial infection called necrotizing fasciitis. She suffered from multiple amputations and is now facing a number of health issues. 

The home builder expects the addition to be completed within 40 days, when Copeland returns home from rehabilitation.

What began quite innocently as a pet project turned into a national movement for Anders Lewendal, the Bozeman, Mont., builder who has since gained wide acclaim for constructing a house made entirely from U.S.-made products.

Initially, Lewendal set out to build an “efficient, affordable and environmentally healthy” home for a client whose daughter has cystic fibrosis. In researching the building materials and parts required for the project, Lewendal was struck with this idea: Why not go for all-American parts and materials.

Channel analysis

Consumer research from the Port Washington, N.Y.-based NPD Group showed sales in the Fertilizer-Herbicide-Pesticide (FHP) category are growing — up 5.5% from a year ago to $1.31 billion. According to NPD, sales may be boosted by a DIY approach to lawn care, a low-cost alternative to hiring professional lawn care services.

The city of Glendale, Calif., has began enforcing a prohibition on synthetic turf for front lawns, according to an article in the Glendale News Press. 

The Glendale ban has been in place for three months, according to the article, but code enforcement officers have recently issued six violation notices to property owners who refused to remove the artificial turf from their front yards. Faux grass in the backyard is permitted, however.

Dalton, Ga.-based SYNLawn has begun selling its brand of residential synthetic grass at 463 Lowe's stores.

The new program is a continuation of a trial offering conducted in Lowe’s stores in five states earlier this year.  SYNLawn will provide rolls of synthetic turf in the most popular sizes, along with basic installation tools for Lowe’s customers who need smaller amounts of turf and want to install it themselves.

Founded in 1970 by an Ontario businessman, Weed Man branched into franchising in 1976. Each operation, which provides complete lawn care service (including fertilization, weed, insect and disease management, as well as aeration and seeding), is locally owned ad operated.

DuPont has told the federal government it will stop the sales of a herbicide that has been blamed for damaging trees around the country, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. The chemical manufacturer notified the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is examining background studies conducted on the new weed killer, called Imprelis. The EPA is also looking at warnings and label directions on the product.

An article in the Columbus Dispatch reported that a new herbicide is suspected of killing thousands of trees in a problem that's causing havoc among nursery companies.

The name of the suspected herbicide is Imprelis. It was introduced in the market by DuPont last fall and is used by lawn-care companies. The newspaper reported that about 75% of Ohio landscapers and golf course superintendents used Imprelis this year.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it is moving to ban the sale of “the most toxic” consumer rat and mouse poisons, as well as most loose bait and pellet products. The agency is also requiring that all newly registered rat and mouse poisons marketed to residential consumers be enclosed in bait stations so children and pets cannot access the pesticide.

Synthetic grass for DIY projects is coming to the shelves at Lowe's. 

The program will offer four pre-cut and pre-packaged sizes.  Those sizes are 3’ x 11’, 5’ x 7.5’, 7.5’ x 7.5’, and 7.5’ x 11’.  These pre-cut pieces of synthetic turf can be used for a variety of projects ranging from landscaping areas, pet areas, play areas, common areas, garages, basements, roof decks, and outdoor patios.
