Midwest building products distributor Arrowhead Building Supply is preparing for the grand opening of its new facility -- an 8,000-sq.-ft. showroom in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

Located just 15 miles from St. Louis, the facility will be the seven-unit company’s easternmost distributor. Arrowhead serves contractors in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

Georgia-Pacific is investing $37 million in its Gurdon, Arkansas, lumber operations, which will see a lumber mill expansion of about 60%.

"As the housing market continues a slow, but steady improvement, our plans to invest at Gurdon ensure our ability to meet the growing needs of our customers and become their lumber supplier of choice," said Fritz Mason, VP and general manager for Georgia-Pacific's lumber business. "This is an opportunity to broaden our product offerings, enhance quality and improve our cost competitiveness."

Orscheln Farm and Home, the third largest farm-and-ranch retailer on the HCN Top 300 Scoreboard, is planning a new location in Trumann, Arkansas, according to an article in the Poinsett County Democrat.

Construction will begin in the next few weeks, according to the article. A similar-sized Orscheln Farm and Home is currently under construction in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Moberly, Missouri-based Orscheln ended last year with 158 units.

The event celebrated HDW’s 20th anniversary.

NASHVILLE, TENN. — Like most of us, Alan Clark worries about the direction of legislation and politics. Like few of us, he got himself elected to the Arkansas state senate.

Clark, the VP and chief operating officer of two-unit Clark Lumber Co. in Hot Springs, Ark., is also the state’s senator for the 13th district. He was part of a wave of recent Republican party victories in Bill Clinton’s backyard. Clark’s legislative class has the first Republican majority in the Arkansas state legislature in 138 years.

Georgia-Pacific and U.S. Lumber have announced they are entering a distribution agreement for engineered wood products (EWP).     The agreement, effective Nov. 1, 2013, provides for U.S. Lumber to distribute Georgia-Pacific engineered lumber in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, the panhandle of Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Both companies are based in Atlanta.

Fishcat Farm, a catfish production raceway based in Arkansas, has developed a new organic fertilizer product called Fishnure, which is made from solid fish manure captured from the raceways. 

The manure, which is based off a high-protein diet and is decomposed with oat straw to create a putty-like substance, is also combined with a carbon source, Mississippi Delta clay and inoculants to attain a proper carbon to nitrogen ratio.
