Aubuchon Hardware was forced to close two of its stores in Northern Vermont on Jan. 18 because of declining sales, according to an article in the Burlington Free Press.
Employees at the Essex Center and Enosburg Falls locations were notified by e-mail on Tuesday at noon, according to an assistant store manager. The company issued a press release saying the closings were made with "much regret."
The Essex Center store had been opened for 39 years, and Enosburg Falls location was in business for 45 years, according to the newspaper.
Founded in 1908, Aubuchon Hardware operates more than 120 stores throughout New England and upstate New York.
