Paris -- During a recent visit to Paris, HCN captured some of the famous French style as it is applied to the hardware store.

As one might expect, lighting is a key merchandising element of the Bazar de l’Hotel de Ville, better known as the BHV. The basement of the six-floor monument of French retail is dedicated to hardware and garden suppliers for the do-it-yourself home improvement consumer.

It wouldn’t work everywhere, but it’s been working here on the rue de Rivoli since the late 19th century.

San Diego -- A century-old California lumber institution with more than a few modern twists served as the stage for the ProDealer Industry Summit’s yard tour in San Diego Oct. 29.

Dixieline Lumber on Sports Arena Boulevard pulled out all the stops for the 75 or so visitors. In addition to tours of the home center and lumberyard, the activities included a presentation from Joe Lawrence, senior VP, and remarks from Robert Marchbank, CEO of Denver-based ProBuild Holdings, Dixieline’s parent company.

Indianapolis -- The Indianapolis Colts weren’t the only Indiana-based organization to have a strong showing over the weekend. Next door to the stadium, Do it Best Corp.’s Fall Market at the Indiana Convention Center saw gains in attendance, a 100-million-dollar-plus rebate distribution and 61 new vendors in the product mix. Sullivan Hardware & Garden in Indianapolis might be the most toured hardware store in the country, seeing how the store has been hosting busloads of Do it Best members twice a year for years. 

Sullivan, a former board member of Do it Best, has a 12,000-sq.-ft. store, a 10,000-sq.-ft. greenhouse, a solid hardware store offering, and a dominance in lawn and garden.
