The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has committed to a multi-year program in which it will fund environmental groups and academic institutions invested in researching solutions to Florida's water quality issues. Additionally, it will launch a multimedia consumer education campaign aimed at teaching homeowners to balance lawncare needs with water conservation.
"As the leader in consumer lawn and garden care, we have a responsibility to help our consumers use our products correctly in order to be good stewards of the environment," said chairman and CEO Jim Hagedorn. "As a resident of the Treasure Coast, and as someone with a passion to be on the water, I have witnessed the challenges in the St. Lucie River, the Indian River Lagoon and other waterways. I want Floridians to be confident that we're helping them do their part to help protect our most valuable natural resources."
For one, Scotts Miracle-Gro will provide a two-year research grant to the Ocean Resource Conservation Association in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
Additionally, the company will partner with environmental restoration groups on water restoration projects, the first of which will provide 80,000 salt marsh plants via a partnership with Tampa Bay Watch.
The company will also work to create community gardens and green spaces in every Florida county over the next three years, in collaboration with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Plant-A-Row For the Hungry.
The initiative, which totals a commitment of $5 million over 3 years, falls in line with a broader effort on the company's part to improve the environmental viability of its lawn care products, removing phosphorus to reduce the amount of total nitrogen as well as enhancing its lawn spreaders for on-target fertilizer application.
