N.J. bill may restrict lawn fertilizer

Anew bill in the New Jersey legislature seeks to restrict the amount of fertilizer homeowners can use on their lawns, according to NorthJersey.com.

The article pointed to alarmingly high rates of unnatural nutrients, like nitrates and phosphates, in the Barnegat Bay. The article said the 30-mile estuary, once famous for its fisheries, is seeing increased algae growth, which limits the amount of oxygen in the water for marine animals.

Scotts Miracle-Gro is contending some of the provisions in the proposed bill, which limits the amount and type of nitrogen in fertilizer to a level that aren't met by the company’s products.
