Canada to send help to build 1,000 homes, shelters in China

The Canadian government and the provincial government of British Columbia are partnering to send $8 million in lumber and building materials to China.

The materials will be used to build homes and emergency shelters in the Sichuan province of China, which was hit hard by earthquakes last month.

The project, to be executed in two phases, includes building as many as 300 20-square-meter buildings for temporary shelters and up to 1,000 smaller permanent homes; and creating a new village, complete with a school and community building, according to the Vancouver Sun newspaper.

British Columbia, heavily entrenched in the lumber industry, is contributing $5 million to the project, with the federal Canadian government picking up $3 million.
